Server & storage engineering

A system-level view of computing, storage and the hardware around them.

Compute and storage platforms bring many engineering decisions into a single physical system. Processing, memory, data movement, power and thermal considerations interact with management software and the surrounding infrastructure. Orelink approaches server and storage engineering with that system context in view.

03.01

Platform architecture

The architecture of a compute or storage platform must reflect its role. Workload requirements, data paths and the surrounding infrastructure determine which engineering questions need attention. A clear platform definition creates the basis for evaluating trade-offs.

Capacity and performance targets are specified for the selected platform architecture and evaluated under agreed operating conditions.

03.02

Physical and functional integration

Boards, interconnects, power delivery and the physical enclosure influence each other. Engineering a complete system means understanding those relationships as well as the individual electronic assemblies.

Integration also reaches into firmware and software. Hardware behaviour, configuration and management information need interfaces that are consistent with the intended operation of the platform.

03.03

Visibility and management

Operational visibility is part of the infrastructure conversation. The information exposed by a platform needs to be useful to the systems that manage it, with an appropriate separation between control, status and application data.

The exact management functions and interfaces are determined by the engagement. Orelink’s wider software and infrastructure-monitoring expertise supports a connected view across hardware and management layers.

03.04

Validation within defined limits

Validation should reflect the intended platform configuration and operating conditions. Functional checks, integration behaviour and system constraints need to be documented so that results can be interpreted correctly.

Production uses external contract manufacturing arrangements. Platform engineering and manufacturing handover are scoped explicitly, with project-specific responsibilities for implementation, verification and supply.
